Lessons from a Tiny Frog

On a recent morning, when I was praying the Rosary while walking around the interior of our North Campus church, I saw something strange attached to the far northeast brick, outside the window. From a distance, it looked like a developing beehive.

As I approached it, I was fascinated to realize that it was a miniature frog that had placed its legs adjacent to the brick outside the window. It seemed to be staring inside the church. As I came closer, the frog did not move in the slightest. Its gaze was set past me, into the church. At the angle in which it had positioned itself, the frog’s gaze was not directed at me, but at the Altar. Despite how fierce I might appear to such a small creature when being seen through the window, it did not seem alarmed at my presence. It did not move. Nothing distracted it from looking at either the Altar or the Cross standing next to it.

As I thought about it, I smiled. So many things in life can scare us, set us off guard, or obscure our focus. This experience showed that we only need to keep our eyes on our loving Lord, Who is always present to help us.

This gave me a sense of peace and reminded me of the Psalm, “Be still and know that I am God.”
