Like the Doe or the Fawn

Last week, I was saying prayers at the North Campus church when I saw something brown flash across my peripheral vision outside of the building. I caught the tail end of what flashed by and it looked almost like a hawk buzzing past the window. I thought to myself, “Oh that poor mouse or bunny rabbit that is about to meet its end”.

Then, shortly afterwards, I saw the same flash and my curiosity took hold of me, so I went to look through one of the west windows. I found out that it was a baby fawn running back and forth behind the church. Almost next to the window was its mother deer, the doe, carefully watching her child prancing and leaping with joy as it ran.

I smiled and was glad it was not some predator attacking a smaller animal.

As I thought about it while watching the fawn, I was moved at seeing its excitement on its outing with its mom. Since this was all happening next to the church, I also thought we should mimic that excitement in the eyes of our faith life, knowing that God is aways present inside and outside of the church…awaiting our invitation to have Him journey with us in life. Knowing that He wants to help should cause us to leap with joy. We are never alone.

I also thought about the doe. She was resting in the shadow of the church while watching her child live life. We too should always rest in the shadow of God’s love. We should not be like the fawn in one sense, running here and there, in the business of life, failing to see God’s presence.

So, the question is, should we be more like a fawn or like a doe? I think we should take lessons from both.
