Res Ipsa Loquitor

Recognizing God

“Res ipsa loquitor” is a Latin phrase used in law. It means, “The thing speaks for itself.” For example, let’s say a patient undergoes surgery. After the operation, the patient continues to suffer pain. An X-ray reveals that a surgical sponge was left inside the patient’s body. The patient may not know who made the mistake, but sponges should never be left inside a patient unless someone made a mistake. The fact that the sponge was left there points to the conclusion that someone is liable for the mishap.

As I have thought about this phrase a number of times in my adult life, I think the concept “the thing speaks for itself” can be an analogy applied to one’s spirituality; not in a legal way pointing to a liability, but in a positive way pointing to God. The old Christian song, “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love” illustrates this fact, noting we should reflect our love of God as seen by the things we say and what we do.

Vivid, recent illustrations of one’s showing love of God were seen in the past two to three weeks, with Father Ted’s return from his sabbatical and at Father Will O’Donnell’s ordination and the celebration of his first Mass.

When Father Ted celebrated his first 8:30am Sunday Mass after he returned, he walked in front the congregation and said, with warmth and tenderness, “I am Father Ted.” The people who were present for the Mass broke out with immediate applause, showing how they missed their beloved pastor. Father Ted spoke in a few sentences about how rewarding the sabbatical was for him and how he missed his parish. Those present could feel His love for Jesus and desire to serve.

The same was true with Father Will. His spirituality is palpable. In his unassuming gentle way, he often speaks of his love of God and desire to serve him. His genuine humility in wanting to help the faithful grow closer to Jesus touches those who talk to him.

May we learn to reflect on such love in those we encounter, whether at work or home, or in whatever circles of life we travel. May we reflect God’s goodness and presence in our world.
