Where Are We Tethered?

Recognizing God

A few Wednesdays ago, we had a very windy day.

As I approached the intersection of Grant Street and US 30, I noticed the stoplight swaying wildly, with the bottom section swinging up almost parallel to the ground. Looking more closely, I saw that the wire holding that section in place had broken. As I drove beneath it, I hoped it would not come loose and strike a car. I also wondered what would happen to the heavy traffic at that intersection if the light failed completely.

As soon as I had that thought, I ran into a traffic jam farther west on US 30. One of the stoplights near Chase Street was out, and traffic had slowed to a crawl, with only one car at a time moving through from each direction. The delay was substantial, with horns blaring, drivers not always taking turns, and some drivers hesitating when it was their turn because of the confusion. It took 15 minutes, or more, to get through the intersection.

As I reflected on this, I thought about our spiritual lives. In our earthly journey, the one thing we should cling to is our faith in and love for God, the teachings of Jesus, and the whispers of the Holy Spirit in the silence of our hearts.

These gifts from God give us confidence as we face the chaos of life, assuring us that we are on our way to a heavenly reward, though eye has not seen and ear has not heard what God has ready for those who love Him.
